The Sarah Baartman District Municipality, in partnership with the Engineering division of Transnet, made good on its promise by donating 811-litres of water to the Moreson Primary School in Paterson, in the Sunday’s River Valley Local Municipality, on 5 April.

In a follow-up to the state-owned parastatal’s donation of the water to the Sarah Baartman District Municipality’s Disaster Management Department in Uitenhage on 1 April, the handover, officially conducted by the Executive Mayor of the Sarah Baartman District Municipality, Khunjuzwa Eunice Kekana, is expected to make a significant difference to the school’s teachers and its 566 pupils.

“This handover, thanks to Transnet, is proof of our collective effort to try and help those affected by water shortages,” Mayor Kekana said.

In her opening statement, Transnet Environmental Manager Pumelela Ndyawe said the supply, donated by employees from its depos in Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and East London, came about after it decided to voice support for the campaign known as "Operation Hydrate", which aims to provide water to communities badly affected by the ongoing drought.

“As Transnet, we felt it was only natural to join a campaign where South Africans come together to help those in need,” Ndyawe said.

Speaking to Sarah Baartman News, Moreson principal Sandiswa Shwempe remarked that the water would be used for emergency needs in the case of any interruptions. She added that the donation has come as a gift to the school, as “everyone has the right to have access to clean water”.

“We are so grateful for this donation. Never has something like this happened to us before,” she said.
