Index Soon to be new municipality named after the late Dr Beyers Naude
Date Added: 06 June 2016

The name of the new municipality, which will be the result of the amalgamation of Ikwezi, Baviaans and Camdeboo local municipalities has been adopted as Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality.

The late Beyers Naude grew up in Graaff-Reinet and, from a very early age, was a community activist who championed the cause of the poor and marginalized. His contribution towards South Africa achieving democracy is well known. In recognition of this, stakeholders of the area, the councils of the three local municipalities and the Sarah Baartman District Municipality deemed it appropriate that the new municipality be accorded the name of Beyers Naude.

The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) in August 2015 announced its decision to re-determine some ward demarcations and municipal boundaries in the country, ahead of the 2016 Local Government Elections. This included the disestablishment of Camdeboo, Ikwezi and Baviaans Local Municipalities and the establishment of a new municipality.
