The Cacadu District Municipality, led by Executive Mayor, Cllr Khunjuzwa Eunice Kekana, together with the Speaker, Cllr Deon de Vos, officials and councillors spent Mandela Day at the Ethembeni Care Centre in Hankey, Kouga Local Municipality.

Amongst the activities undertaken by the team from the Cacadu District Municipality, working in partnership with the Kouga Local Municipality, was cleaning, painting of the interior walls and replacing broken windows, toilet seats and taps. In addition, the existing jungle gym was fitted with new swings and fruit trees were planted.

The Ethembeni Care Centre was started by 6 members of the Hankey community in 2001 and operates as a community centre offering day-care to 99 children between the ages of one and five, and after-care to 49 school-going children, from Monday to Friday. The Centre employs 10 care givers, amongst others, that support people living with HIV/Aids (currently 83 people in the community), the elderly and the disabled (approximately 69). The Centre also runs a foster care programme for orphans and vulnerable children (about 39 at present). The operations of the centre are mainly funded by the Department of Social Development, with assistance also rendered by Standard Bank, Sacred heart Church in Port Elizabeth and Care Ministry.
