Date Added: 06 December 2013

It is with deep sadness that the Cacadu District Municipality learnt of the passing of the father of South Africa’s democracy – Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. He passed away peacefully in the company of his family around 20:50 on the 5th of December 2013.

As the world takes leave of this beloved leader and former State President, Dr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, we recall his exceptional ability to lead during a time when the country was trying to find its feet as a fledgling democracy. While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate his life, staying true to his ideals, including his unwavering commitment to justice, equality and a non-racial South Africa.

Our condolences are extended to his wife Mrs Graca Machel, his former wife Ms Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, his children, grand-children and the entire family, while our thoughts are with his close friends, comrades and colleagues who fought for freedom alongside Madiba.

A number of memorial services will be held at several venues to give everyone the opportunity to attend. These arrangements will be communicated as soon as the information is available. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela will be laid to rest during an official state funeral. The arrangements for the funeral will also be published here as soon as it becomes available.

Out of respect for this great icon, the Cacadu District Municipality will be holding a special prayer session on Monday the 9th of December.

“Death is something inevitable. When a man has done what he considers to be his duty, to his people and his country, he can rest in peace. I believe I have made that effort and that is, therefore, I will sleep for the eternity.” ~ Nelson Mandela, 1996.

Hamba Kahle, Madiba.
