District Urges Residents to Remain Vigilant as Fires Break Out Across Sarah Baartman

The Sarah Baartman District Municipality has noted with serious concern the increase in fires breaking out across various parts of the district, placing communities, infrastructure, livestock, and the natural environment at risk.

These fires, exacerbated by hot, dry and windy conditions, have required a coordinated response from firefighting services, disaster management teams, local municipalities, provincial departments, law enforcement, volunteers, civil society and the private sector. Firefighters continue to work tirelessly under challenging and often dangerous conditions to contain outbreaks and protect lives.

Fires Are Often Human-Caused

While weather conditions play a role, many fires are preventable. The Municipality strongly urges residents, farmers, businesses and visitors to refrain from starting fires, including:

• Open burning of refuse or vegetation
• Making fires in open or windy areas
• Discarding lit cigarette butts
• Leaving braais, campfires or cooking fires unattended

Even a small spark can quickly spread into a large and uncontrollable fire, especially when embers are carried by strong winds.

Report Fires Immediately

Early reporting is critical in preventing fires from spreading and causing extensive damage. Residents are urged to report any fire or smoke immediately to emergency services.
