Stakeholder Engagement on Proposed Thyspunt Nuclear Build Programme
The Sarah Baartman District Municipality (SBDM) hosted a stakeholder engagement session on 13 August 2026 in Humansdorp, led by the SBDM Executive Mayor, bringing together Eskom and Khoi-San Traditional Leaders to discuss the proposed Nuclear Build Programme at Thyspunt.
The session provided Eskom with an opportunity to update Traditional Leaders on the proposed development, including anticipated timelines, socio-economic opportunities and environmental processes. It also created a platform for Khoi-San Traditional Authorities to raise concerns, share cultural considerations and highlight community aspirations, while discussing meaningful mechanisms for ongoing community participation.
Key issues raised included the conservation of biodiversity, protection of Khoi-San heritage, job creation, education and skills development, economic empowerment, youth development and long-term environmental stewardship.
Eskom responded to the concerns raised and provided further information on how these matters would be considered as the programme progresses.
The engagement reaffirmed the importance of open dialogue, meaningful consultation and informed community participation in developments that have the potential to significantly impact the region and its communities.
